Henry Street Settlement opens doors of opportunity for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social service, arts, and health care programs.
The Third Street Women’s Residence provides transitional shelter and supportive services to 79 homeless women with mental illness concerns who are in need of permanent housing. They are referred to the facility from assessment centers and/or by the New York City Department of Homeless Services.
The staff provides an array of social and housing placement services, working with the residents to enhance and develop life management skills, as well as to manage their mental health conditions. When needed, residents are referred to community-based organizations.
Onsite services include:
- Individual and group counseling
- Housing search assistance
- Advocacy
- Onsite medical services
- Onsite psychiatric services
- Applying for government benefits
- Vocational counseling
- Cultural and educational activities
- Meals
- Aftercare services
In NYC, the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) makes all decisions about shelter placement. If you’ve been in shelter in the last 12 months, you should return to the same shelter. If you’re experiencing domestic violence, please call Safe Horizon’s 24-hour hotline: 800.621.HOPE (4673).
Single women can apply for shelter at the HELP Women’s Shelter (116 Williams Avenue between Liberty & Glenmore Avenues, Brooklyn; C train to Liberty Avenue) or the Franklin Shelter (1122 Franklin Avenue, near 166th Street, the Bronx; 2 train to 149th Street, then the BX15 bus to 166th Street & 3rd Avenue).
