Winter Volunteer Service at Henry Street

By Astrid Corvin-Brittin

Braving the winter cold, 82 volunteers representing nine corporations and organizations volunteered their time and expertise at Henry Street in January and February. Their efforts — from painting program spaces to supporting program curricula — made an important impact on our community.

Morgan Stanley
Volunteers from Morgan Stanley painted classrooms at the Workforce Development and helped clients in Henry Street’s Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) create resumes and improve interview skills.

In January, in collaboration with New York Cares, a team of analysts from Morgan Stanley Investment Management brightened the hallways of Henry Street’s Workforce Development Center location at 24 Avenue D, which serves residents living in public housing, with a fresh coat of paint — helping the Center go from drab to fab.

Hosting a Mock Interview and Resume Workshop for clients in Henry Street’s Young Adult Internship Program, volunteers from Morgan Stanley returned in February to share their professional experience and encourage young adults about to embark on their search for employment.

Credit Suisse
Conducting “Black History Month Jeopardy” at the Settlement’s after-school program at the Boys & Girls Republic, the Credit Suisse volunteers used the popular game show format to test (and teach) the children in seven different categories, including sports, arts and entertainment, science, politics, civil rights and music.

UBS Financial Services
In preparation for the opening of Henry Street’s Jobs Plus Program — a major new employment program serving public housing residents in the Jacob Riis and Lillian Wald houses — volunteers from UBS spent a day transforming classroom and office space with a fresh coat of paint to help give the Workforce Development Center (the program site) a crisp new makeover.

Macy’s
For the annual celebration of the Lunar New Year at Day Care, volunteers from Macy’s made the holiday fun with a special “Year of the Snake” mask craft project and a Lunar New Year parade for all of the children.

Brown Brothers Harriman
Brown Brothers Harriman, in partnership with United Way of New York City, hosted a Mock Interview and Resume Workshop for clients of Henry Street Young Adult Internship Program. The youth rotated to different interviewers to receive diverse and constructive feedback on their resumes and interview question responses.

Deloitte
This February, volunteers from Deloitte Consulting coordinated a special activity to help kindergarten and first graders at the Boys & Girls Republic explore different feelings and emotional responses. The activity allowed the children to explore feelings such as affection and caring.

Trevor Day School
As a part of Trevor Day School’s annual service day, high school students helped prepare and serve lunch to seniors at Henry Street’s Good Companions Senior Center in January.
