Thanksgiving at Good Companions
By Henry Street Settlement
Good Companions Senior Center serves delicious meals six days per week to Lower East Side seniors, and Thanksgiving was no exception.
Seniors and their guests — 81 visitors in total — enjoyed a traditional holiday meal of turkey with gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and more at the Center, all served by Henry Street staff and volunteers.
Among the 14 volunteers – most from CityMeals on Wheels and New York Cares — were Robert Mancuso, a member of Henry Street’s Board of Directors, and his daughter Miranda.
“I want to commend all dedicated and passionate Henry Street staff members I met on Thanksgiving,” said Mancuso. Mancuso and his daughter also delivered Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors, and noted that Meals on Wheels lead driver, David Baker, “is a capable and caring individual who goes beyond what is expected.”
Spending one’s holiday volunteering shows true dedication. “I wanted to do something different this Thanksgiving and the thought of delivering Thanksgiving dinner to the homebound and serving dinner to those less fortunate appealed greatly to me,” said Mancuso. “Having done this I hope to make this type of caring part of the Mancuso Family tradition in the future.”
Senior clients expressed their appreciation for the lovely decorations, delicious food and abundant hospitality at this successful Thanksgiving event.
