Kelly, who joined Henry Street in 2012, successfully turned around three failing school based mental health clinics that the Settlement had taken over from another agency. Today, she oversees mental health clinics in nine public schools. Kelly and her staff of four social workers, and numerous social work interns, have helped more than 170 children and families with more than 3,700 sessions just in the past year.
Aimée Simpierre, Editor-at-Large for NewYorkNonprofit Media, noted, “We were honored to undertake the challenge of selecting 40 individuals who exemplify the level of commitment and degree of influence that qualifies them as rising stars. All have made what every nonprofit strives to make: an impact.”
This is the second recent award for Kelly, who has master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University; in 2014 she received an Emerging Social Work Leader Award in 2014 from the National Association of Social Workers. Before joining the Settlement, Kelly was a psychiatric social worker in a hospital, and worked in the foster care field. She is also a Registered Yoga Teacher.
“Kelly forms strong relationships with her staff, leading them with clinical competence and ensures their ongoing professional development,” said Diane Rubin, Chief Program Officer at Henry Street. “She is a true advocate for the children and families on the Lower East Side, many of them impoverished and/or non-English speakers, who need help with mental health issues to ensure their successful education,” noted Kristin Hertel, Deputy Program Officer of Health & Wellness at Henry Street.
