Seven Steps to a Healthy School Year
By Henry Street Settlement
The first day of school in New York City is September 9. Let HUL help make it a healthy school year.
Getting ready to go back to school can be stressful. From finding a safe route to and from school to buying pencils, binders and other materials, add to that Department of Education medical requirements, and it can all become overwhelming.
Well don’t worry, Henry Street’s Health Unlimited Family Medical Center (HUL) makes it easy. The Center offers physicals, immunizations, vision and hearing screenings, and can complete the required school health forms and send it electronically to your child’s school. Parents will receive a print-out of their child’s health and immunization status for their records. Kevin Charlotten, M.D., Medical Director of HUL, offers a seven-step guide to ensure your children are healthy, vaccinated and ready for school.
- Make sure your child has had a recent physical examination, and school health forms are completed.
- Ensure that your child’s immunizations are current. Immunizations requirements depend on age; click here to see what’s needed for your child.
- If your child has allergies, create an action plan with the school nurse for treatment should your child need medication at school.
- Check your child for head lice and treat if necessary.
- If your child receives medication (e.g. for diabetes, asthma, or other chronic issues) make sure the school knows and that nurses and staff have permission to administer the medication.
- Have you child’s vision and hearing tested.
- Make sure that all emergency contact numbers are up-to-date.
Health Unlimited provides family-centered, comprehensive primary health care services for the entire family. Services are available in English, Spanish and Chinese.
