Henry Street’s Senior Companions program held their Winter 2013 Holiday Recognition Party at NYU’s Kimmel Building on Thursday. The catered event (with a Hawaiian Luau theme!) was attended by Manhattan Borough President-elect Gale Brewer and District 1 City Council Representative Margaret Chin, and featured music and dancing.
Henry Street Executive Director David Garza welcomed everyone to the ceremony, and thanked the Senior Companions for embodying the mission of Henry Street by opening doors of opportunity for their clients.
Garza introduced Councilwoman Margaret Chin, who congratulated the Senior Companions for their service achievements, and expressed her gratitude to the crowd for their love of the neighborhood and community.
After the lunch service, Garza also introduced borough president-elect Gale Brewer. “We are here to celebrate not just the work you do to help NYC residents, but also the holidays, and a brand new administration for New York City,” she said.
Brewer spoke about her goals to create a more age-friendly city. One statement regarding the eradication of bicycles on sidewalks was met with cheers and applause. “Congratulations to all of you – events like these are the best kind of bringing people together. When I see different folks coming together for celebration, I know that’s the best thing for our neighborhoods, communities and city.”
