Ruth Taube—a Henry Street Settlement employee for nearly 50 years—was named “New Yorker of the Week” by NY 1 and featured in a broadcast and live interview on Friday, January 9. The segment aired hourly throughout the weekend.
The “New Yorker of the Week” segment debuted during NY1’s “The Call” hosted by John Schiumo. The story featured Ruth working at Henry Street’s Home Planning Workshop, where she teaches neighborhood residents to sew, crochet and knit. David Garza, Executive Director of Henry Street, was interviewed about Ruth’s contributions to Henry Street. Workshop participants spoke about the long-lasting impact Ruth has had on their lives.
The segment garnered more social media attention than any other New Yorker of the Week segment, according to the show’s producer, who said that Twitter was lighting up with hashtags like #inspirational. One tweet even suggested that Ruth would make a good advisor to Mayor de Blasio.
This honor is the latest among many for Ruth. She was named a Lower East Side Community Hero as part of Lower East Side History Month, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Ruth, a lifelong Lower East Side resident, is a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
