Record Crowds Visit Henry Street’s Headquarters
By Henry Street Settlement
It was first come, everyone served at Henry Street on Saturday, October 17, when nearly 260 individuals – a record! — toured the historic settlement house as part of Open House New York weekend.
Visitors were treated to a brief, illustrated talk (including a ghost story) and a tour of our c. 1830 federal style row houses. Highlights featured the restored parlor dining room (a founding site of the NAACP and where Jacob Riis and Theodore Roosevelt dined); the backyard (site of one of the first playgrounds in the nation); the bedrooms occupied by the first visiting nurses; Henry Street founder Lillian Wald’s original bedroom and sleeping porch; the rain garden; and the exterior of the adjacent firehouse where Boss Tweed once worked.
Open House New York, held annual gives New Yorkers access to hundreds of New York locations varying from the historical to innovative and cutting-edge newer buildings. This is Henry Street Settlement’s sixth year participating in Open House New York.
