Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Immediately after Hurricane Sandy, Henry Street helped distribute thousands of meals, bottles of water and blankets to Lower East Side residents and braved challenging conditions to keep vital services running.
But the support didn’t stop there: In the weeks since the storm, the Settlement provided 355 area families with $25,495 in food vouchers and assistance with utility bills, through funds given to Henry Street by the Robin Hood Foundation.
The food vouchers, worth $50 each, were purchased from the Fine Fare Supermarket at 545 Grand Street, which also suffered losses from the storm.
“We are pleased to be helping not only families but also another hard-hit Lower East Side institution,” said David Garza, Executive Director of Henry Street.
