More than 500 Attend Exhibit Opening
By Ryan Wenzel
The Abrons Arts Center was packed on Sunday, February 17, as more than 500 art lovers attended the opening of DECENTER, an exciting new exhibition that celebrates the legacy of the 1913 Armory Show. The exhibit, which was featured in The New York Times, showcases 27 emerging and internationally recognized contemporary artists and highlights Henry Street’s sponsorship of the 50th anniversary exhibition of the Armory Show in 1963, the occasion which announced the construction of what is today known as the Abrons Arts Center. Henry Street further developed this historic legacy through the annual Art Show at the Park Avenue Armory, the first of multiple art fairs inspired by the original Armory event.
The day’s activities began at 4 p.m. in the Abrons Playhouse with two panel discussions helmed by artists and curators; the first explored the legacy of the 1913 Armory Show, and the second addressed perception and art in the Digital Age. An opening was held at 6 p.m. in the Abrons Main Gallery, where the works are on display.
DECENTER, which was curated by Andrianna Campbell and Daniel S. Palmer, will be on view at the Abrons until Sunday, April 7. The Main Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
