Marching for Peace at the LES Unity Rally
By Henry Street Settlement
Hundreds of community members, including Henry Street staff and youth clients, rallied last night in a march to end violence on the Lower East Side. The Settlement was one of the sponsors of the march and rally, which began at the Settlement’s Boys & Girls Republic and ended at Columbia and Delancey streets, where 16-year-old Raphael Ward was murdered on January 4. The event was organized by Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President.
David Garza, Executive Director of Henry Street, which has several youth programs in the neighborhood, said, “We are committed to doing everything in our power to bring about the end to violence in the neighborhood. We engage youth and their families in education, employment and recreation programs to offer an alternative.”
