Making An Impact: Summer 2013 Volunteer Service at Henry Street
By Allison Schrag
This summer, some 842 individuals — representing 21 corporations and organizations – volunteered at Henry Street. These dedicated volunteers made an impact across the Settlement by participating in carnivals for our youth and seniors, enhancing our facilities by gardening and painting program spaces, and working one-on-one with clients conducting resume workshops and youth educational activities.
CREDIT SUISSE
From painting and gardening, to homework help for the afterschool program and special events for our youth and seniors, Credit Suisse employees brought their skills and expertise to programs and clients across Henry Street.
AMERICAN EXPRESS
American Express volunteers supported our clients by reviewing our job seekers’ resumes, gardening and painting, and doing arts and crafts with our day care and after-school students.
MORGAN STANLEY
Morgan Stanley volunteers joined in celebrating the summer by supporting two carnivals for our youth. But it wasn’t all fun and games — these hardworking volunteers also reviewed resumes for our job seekers.
ALLEN & OVERY
In a continuing commitment to support the Boys and Girls Republic, Allen & Overy donated school supplies and educational games. Volunteers stopped by to distribute the gifts, play the games with the students, and to get to know them better.
WELLS FARGO
Wells Fargo volunteers helped us improve the gardens at our East Third Street supportive housing residence. They’re now thriving and looking great.
CTW GOLDMAN SACHS
CTW Goldman Sachs volunteers displayed some impressive gardening skills, beautifying the gardens across our campus.
CITISHARE
To celebrate the end of the summer, Citishare sponsored a carnival for our summer camp youth and, judging by the face paint creations the youth were sporting, everyone had a blast.
DELOITTE
Deloitte volunteers donated their gardening skills and expertise to maintain our gardens as a welcoming oasis for the community.
UBS
UBS volunteers sponsored a wonderful barbecue for our Urban Family Center residents and youth at the Boys and Girls Republic summer camp. With activities like face painting, water games, and a DJ, it was a great way to end the summer.
OTHER VOLUNTEER PROJECTS
We also benefitted from wonderful volunteers from Brown Brothers Harriman, Women’s Leadership Council, SJL Attorney Search, Soho House, Keller Williams NYC, iN DEMAND, the PIMCO Foundation, New York Life Insurance Company, Moody’s, COACH, and Macy’s. These hardworking volunteers loaned their skills and expertise by providing much needed support for our job search clients, getting their hands dirty and maintaining our garden, keeping our spaces professional and welcoming by painting, and interacting with youth at day care and at a carnival.
The summer heat never deterred our hardworking volunteers. With smiles on their faces, and shovels or face-painting brushes in their hands, these men and women brought enthusiasm and expertise to a variety of our programs.
