Henry Street Youth Take Home Basketball Trophy
By Ryan Wenzel
It was a slam dunk for Henry Street as one of three youth basketball teams from our Boys & Girls Republic (BGR) brought home the championship trophy from a February 23 tournament at the James Weldon Johnson Houses in Harlem.
The tournament was part of the Saturday Night Lights Initiative, a collaboration between the New York District Attorney’s Office, the Drug Enforcement Agency, ProHoops, the Police Athletic League and Henry Street that aims to combat youth violence. Youth participate in eight weeks of workouts and drills that help build their basketball skills before competing in a city-wide three-on-three tournament, against other program participants from other Saturday Night Lights programs around the city.
