Henry Street Seniors Receive Penny Harvest Donation from PS184M

When people say no donation is too small, they’re right! Henry Street Settlement received a generous donation of $500 – raised only in pennies – from students at local elementary school PS 184M, the Shuang Wen School.
The students and Shuang Wen School donated the $500 to Henry Street’s Good Companions Senior Center. The students, along with their teachers and families, raised a total of $2,295 in pennies as part of its annual Penny Harvest Campaign held during the 2014-15 school year.
“This was a very thoughtful and lovely surprise for two reasons,” says Milvi Vehik, Program Director at Good Companions. “It was unexpected, and it came from youngsters, beautifully bridging the intergenerational aspects between giver and recipient.
“The timing was also fortuitous. As we approach the end of our Fiscal Year when resources are limited, this will allow us to replace some supplies and decorate the center for an upcoming holiday celebration.”
The Penny Harvest campaign was started in 1991 to encourage young children to become active in raising money for charities and nonprofit organizations. Nearly 250,000 youth across the country participate in a Penny Harvest Campaign each year.
In addition to the $500 donation to the Good Companions Senior Center, PS 184M made donations to 96 Elephants, the Children’s Aid Society and The Fund for Public Schools. The classes raising the most money during the year were rewarded with ice cream parties.
