Henry Street After-School Lights Up for COMPASS
By Nicole Fogarty
Cheers of “After-school ROCKS!” could be heard echoing off the walls of school auditoriums throughout the Lower East Side last week when hundreds of Henry Street after-school students joined Lights On After-School’s annual celebration on October 22.
Lights On After-School is a nationwide rally to highlight the importance of after-school programs and services like those offered at Henry Street Settlement.
Students and staff from five different Henry Street after-school sites spent their afternoons celebrating their programs. They drew murals, attended workshops, wrote creative writing pieces, honored staff, performed dances, and shared stories with parents, caretakers and community members alike.
This year’s festivities had an added cause for celebration– COMPASS NYC (The Comprehensive After School System of New York City) is celebrating its 10th year. COMPASS assists over 900 after-school programs throughout New York City.
