George Barber Munroe, a longtime member of Henry Street’s Board of Directors and former Chairman of the Executive Committee, passed away on August 19, at the age of 92.
Munroe, the former CEO of Phelps Dodge Corporation was a truly a Renaissance man: professional basketball star, veteran of the U.S. Navy, Rhodes Scholar and lawyer. He held degrees from Dartmouth, Harvard, Oxford and Christ Church.
A dedicated and generous philanthropist – he also served on the boards of Dartmouth, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the YMCA of greater New York and the Academy of Political Science — he is remembered with fondness and respect by his Settlement colleagues. “He was a very fine and distinguished man,” said Richard Abrons, Vice Chairman of Henry Street’s Board of Directors.
He is survived by his wife Elinor Bunin Munroe, and two sons, George Taylor and Ralph W. Taylor, from his previous marriage to Helen Taylor.
