Celebrating Community Day With Our Community Advisory Board
By Chelsea Jupin
Music, games, dancing and more filled the Sol Lain Playground on July 30, 2016 as Henry Street’s Community Advisory Board (CAB) hosted a day of summer fun for Lower East Siders (and Lower East Side visitors!). People of all ages spent the afternoon enjoying free food, Bingo, yoga classes, raffles and learning more about Henry Street Settlement’s programs.
Representatives from both NYC Votes and NYCID were onsite with information on voter registration and New York City identification cards. Henry Street Board member Teddy Liouliakis stopped by to enjoy the festivities, and New York State Assemblymember Alice Cancel danced with community members to tunes spun by a DJ.
“We are thrilled with the great event put together by our CAB and our staff,” said David Garza, Executive Director of Henry Street. “The CAB ensures that the Settlement maintains “an ear to the ground,” and is connected to the neighborhood.”
Deputy Development Officer of Public Policy and External Relations Jeremy Reiss added, “We are proud of the hard work that our CAB has done to make our Community Day such a success. The CAB helps us play a vital role in our community, and we’re eager to continue this work on Henry Street’s behalf.”
“The CAB members were involved in every step of the planning process of Community Day,” said Talia DeRogatis, Public Policy and Community Engagement Liaison. “It was amazing to see how well the CAB and community all worked together and how much we all care about this neighborhood. This event would not have been possible without Debbie Cox (Henry Street staff and CAB member) and the CAB. We all can’t wait for the next one!”
The Community Advisory Board, launched in 2015, reflects the agency’s commitment to community engagement and resident-driven advocacy work. CAB members include Lower East Side residents and Henry Street clients of diverse backgrounds, ages, and ethnicities.
