The city’s brightest high school seniors – including eight from Henry Street’s Expanded Horizons College Success Program — gathered for The 2016 New York Consortium National College Decision Day on May 5. Henry Street Settlement is a proud partner of the event, organized by Harlem Educational Activities Fund. Students from programs at all 21 partnering organizations met for the celebration at the Citi Building.
Kicking off the event, Ruth Rathblott, President and CEO or the Harlem Educational Activities Fund, welcomed the students, stating that as the class of 2020, “that means you have the vision.” In addition to Rathblott, Professor Christopher Edmin of Columbia gave a rousing and impassioned keynote address, where he stressed to the students that “your education is a tool to improve where you came from, not to escape it.”
Good Morning America anchor Ron Claiborne concluded the event by bringing each student up to announce where they were headed to college in the fall. Students from Henry Street Settlement will attend New York University, SUNY Binghamton, Alfred University, City College of New York, SUNY New Paltz, Brooklyn College and Hunter College.
Expanded Horizons is a comprehensive eight-year program which is designed to ensure that high school students are college-ready once they graduate, are admitted to a college that fits their interests and abilities, and graduate from that institution on time. More information about the program can be found on our website.
